Project Blue Book Case File
Qutdlingssat, Sarqaq, Claushayn, Greenland, January 1959January 1959
Summary
On January 13, 1959, civilian witnesses in Greenland reported bright objects in the sky over several settlements, including Qutdligssat, Sarqaq, and Claushavn. The first sighting was about 2 p.m. local time (1400Z), with others following.
Witnesses described a greenish blue, ball shaped object that gave off a very bright radiating light and a tail of light. It moved very fast from north to south. About 1600Z a similar light was seen on the same course, this time with a tail that looked like the exhaust from a jet engine. From another settlement, an observer saw a rocket like object with an exhaust tail going west then turning south, glowing reddish.
The report described three separate sightings with similar features. The Air Force concluded the case was astronomical. The record card said the descriptions had all the characteristics of fireballs, and that there were two meteor showers during this period.
