Project Blue Book Case File
Pineville, LouisianaJuly 1949
Summary
On July 15, 1949, objects were reported over Pineville, Louisiana, and nearby Libuse and Colfax. The reports appeared in the Pineville News newspaper that day. An Air Force Office of Special Investigations agent investigated. The Air Force conclusion was "other (hoax)." The case was handled under Project Sign and Project Grudge, early Air Force studies of these reports.
The newspaper article said two objects looked like stove lids, were dark in color, and seemed to float in the air. It said they were seen for about five minutes heading north at about 75 feet up. Later reports in the paper described shiny discs and small dark plate-sized discs traveling northeast.
The investigation found that the sighting was a hoax. On July 21, 1949, the investigation of the Pineville News showed that a newspaper worker had started the hoax along with two other employees. He told the agent the printed story was false and made up. He said the hoax was done purely in fun, with no intent to cause trouble, and took full responsibility. The case was closed.
