Project Blue Book Case File
Pacific (30-30N 139-05W), January 1960January 1960
Summary
On January 10 to 11, 1960, a crew member aboard a U.S. Navy transport plane saw an unusual light over the Pacific Ocean, near 30 degrees North and 139 degrees West. The plane was flying from Hawaii to California. The sighting happened during the early morning hours.
A Navy chief first saw the object. It looked like a very bright white light with an irregular, roughly round edge. He said it was about half the size of a full moon. A second crew member, an ensign, also watched it. The object moved in a straight line and grew smaller until it vanished. Both men watched it for about 12 to 15 seconds. The plane's radar was off, so the sighting could not be checked on radar.
This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force concluded the object was a slow meteor of the fireball type. The card noted its speed was about one third that of a falling star.
