Project Blue Book Case File
Oslo, Norway, December 1947 - Incident Number: 132December 1947
Summary
On December 12, 1947, at 10:05 p.m., a 16-year-old girl in Oslo, Norway, saw an intensely bright object in the sky. She described it as yellow-white at first, then red as it descended. The object moved not quite as fast as a meteor and had a very large circular curvature. There was no noise, and the sighting lasted only about 9 seconds.
The U.S. Air Force office in Oslo requested that embassy staff interrogate the witness and gather a detailed written statement about what she had observed. The military also asked for comments from qualified personnel, particularly from the University of Oslo, regarding this incident and a similar sighting on December 13th.
The investigator's conclusion appears on page 2 of the file: "The object observed here answers the description of a fireball, and the probability that it actually was one is very great." A fireball is a meteor that burns brightly as it enters Earth's atmosphere. However, because the object's speed was distinctly slower than a typical meteor, this explanation was not entirely certain.
