Mt. Palomar, Calif., September 1950September 1950
Summary
On September 26, 1950, about 8:36 p.m. Pacific time, two Air Force navigators reported an object near the Mt. Palomar Observatory in California. The report is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
The two officers were standing outside the observatory at about 6,000 feet, watching the sky, when they saw what looked like a shooting star above the handle of the Big Dipper, about 15 degrees above the horizon. The object moved at great speed across a wide arc of the sky in two to three minutes. It gave off a loud, swirling, whooshing noise like a rocket exhaust. The only part they could see was a bluish white light that flickered on and off and looked about the size of a star. The weather was clear and no exhaust trail was seen.
