Summary

On February 6, 1959, a military weather observer at Mitchel Air Force Base, New York, reported a light in the night sky. The sighting was about 6:25 p.m. local time (2325Z) and lasted about 25 minutes. The observer was an experienced weather observer who used a theodolite.

He described one round, white light about the size of a pea. It held steady, then moved slowly from west to north in a circular motion. There was no sound or trail. The light was measured at an azimuth of about 255 to 260 degrees and an elevation near 38 to 39 degrees.

The Air Force concluded the case was other, listed as a reflection. The record card said the long duration was too long for an aircraft or balloon under the wind conditions, and that the observer highly probably saw a reflection on a cloud.
