Summary
# A Round White Light Over Luke Air Force Base
In the early morning hours of August 2, 1952, two airmen spotted something unusual while driving between Glendale, Arizona, and Luke Air Force Base. At 2337 hours (11:37 p.m.), A/3C saw a round white light about 4 inches in diameter traveling in a straight line across the sky. The object moved at an estimated speed of 200 miles per hour, maintained a constant altitude of 1,000 to 1,500 feet, and flew from north to south-southwest. There was no sound, no exhaust, and no visible means of propulsion. The manner in which it appeared and disappeared was very abrupt.
Three minutes later, the identical sequence repeated. The entire sighting lasted only 3 to 4 seconds. Weather conditions at the time were clear with visibility extending 15 miles or more. The temperature was 88 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Air Force officially classified this case as unidentified. The file notes indicate that weather analysis and winds aloft were documented, though no conventional explanation appears to have been reached. An officer from the 127th Pilot Training Wing at Luke filed the initial report with the Air Technical Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.
