Litschau, Czechoslavakia, January 1959January 1959
Summary
On January 16, 1959, police and other witnesses near Litschau, Austria, reported a flying object close to the Czechoslovak border. The sighting happened around noon and lasted about two minutes.
Witnesses described one luminous round object. It came from Czechoslovak territory, crossed the border, then soared steeply upward at immense speed while making a hissing noise. It then circled and returned across the Czech border. Its speed was estimated at about three times that of the Czech jets that often patrol the area. Police assumed it was a guided rocket, since its sound and shape were not like a plane's.
The Air Force record card listed the case under other. The card said there was no reason to disagree with the witnesses and assumed a guided missile. The information came from a news report.
