Project Blue Book Case File
KILLEEN, TEXASSeptember 1952
Summary
Before daybreak on September 17, 1952, about 4:48 a.m. local time, an Army military police corporal on sentry duty at Killeen Base, Killeen, Texas, reported an object directly overhead. He said he was looking at the stars when he saw the object at about 1,000 feet fly over his head.
The corporal described the object as about 10 feet across with a green fluorescent appearance on the front and two roughly six-foot red flames protruding from the rear. He watched it for about two to three seconds. He estimated its speed at 700 to 800 mph and said it traveled from southwest to northeast. About two seconds after it passed, he heard a peculiar sound like a model airplane engine.
The corporal had no experience as an aircraft observer and no background in astronomy. He provided a sketch of what he saw, which is described in the report. Project 10073 is the Air Force's record for unidentified flying object reports. The record card notes the source does not sound credible, and the conclusion is listed as unknown.
