Project Blue Book Case File
[ILLEGIBLE], October 1950October 1950
Summary
On October 1, 1950, residents in the Masabuka district of Northern Rhodesia were awakened at 4:15 a.m. by a loud explosion that shook several buildings. A bright flash was seen in the sky just before the explosion. The noise was heard fifty miles away in Kafue. Initial concern about a dynamite truck explosion in the area was ruled out. Several Africans reported seeing the bright flash. An official at the meteorological station suggested the explosion may have been caused by a large meteorite that disintegrated before reaching the ground. Other sources claimed it was a comet. The general opinion accepted by authorities was that the explosion resulted from a meteorite of fairly substantial size.
