Project Blue Book Case File
Huerfano Mesa, New MexicoSeptember 1958
Summary
On September 15, 1958, two color slides were taken near Huerfano Mesa, New Mexico, by a civilian. The photos showed a rainbow-like object in the sky. The case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
The slides were sent to the Air Force's photographic interpretation office for study. Analysts examined the images closely. They found that one slide contained multiple images of the sun. There was no clear image on a second slide.
The Air Force concluded that the object was astronomical. The report states the images were a parhelion, also called a sun dog. This is a reflection of the sun in the atmosphere.
