Project Blue Book Case File
Hibbing, Minn., March 1950March 1950
Summary
On the evening of March 28, 1950, four people in Northern Minnesota reported seeing a glowing object moving across the sky near Hibbing and Duluth. The most detailed accounts came from two witnesses in Hibbing, located approximately two and a half miles from the Androy Hotel.
The object appeared as a greenish glowing shape roughly the size of a 55-gallon oil drum with a tail-like extension. It traveled from north to south while descending at a 45-degree angle at a steady, straight path. The witnesses observed it for about four seconds before it disappeared behind an obstruction. The object made no sound and left no visible exhaust.
The Air Force Intelligence Officer at Wold Chamberlain Field in Minneapolis investigated the sighting and interviewed the two most credible witnesses. One was a foot specialist; the other was a former Air Force pilot. Both observers were considered exceptionally reliable and had good ability to judge color, speed, and distance. The investigation ruled out solar phenomena, experimental aircraft, and normal military or commercial aviation activity. The Air Force's conclusion on what the object was does not appear in the file.
