Project Blue Book Case File
Guam, September 1960September 1960
Summary
On September 29, 1960, military radar operators on Guam reported a target at 1235 (about 12:45 a.m. local). Ground-controlled approach radar at the naval air station picked up a target at 20 miles, tracked it to within 2 miles on a collision course, at an estimated speed of 2,880 knots. No target was seen leaving outbound, and no known aircraft was in the area. A tower observer saw a pale blue light with binoculars, but lost contact when he turned away for a moment. There was no sound. Both observers were considered reliable. An Air Force analysis said the facts were insufficient for a firm conclusion. The target was observed for only about a third of a minute, too short to correlate radar and visual. The Air Force listed the case as anomalous propagation, which frequently causes false radar targets at fantastic speeds.
