Project Blue Book Case File
Goose AFB, Babrador Canada, August 1959August 1959
Summary
On the night of August 13, 1959, Flight Lieutenant M.S. Mowat, a 32-year-old rated pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force at Goose Air Force Base in Labrador, spotted an unusual bright white light in the sky. The object first appeared on the horizon at bearing 242 degrees (roughly west-southwest) and remained visible for 25 minutes as it moved overhead.
Mowat observed the light with binoculars under clear skies. The object moved faster than a star and traveled from the horizon directly above him, remaining in sight throughout. Weather conditions were calm at all altitudes, with winds from 280 to 299 degrees at 35 knots above 30,000 feet. A senior controller at the base suggested the object might be a star, but the movement and behavior ruled that out.
The Air Force evaluation form on file does not clearly indicate a final conclusion. The OCR text on the final pages is heavily degraded and difficult to read, making it impossible to determine with certainty what explanation the investigators favored. The case remains marked as unknown in the official record card.
The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives across 10 pages of microfilm.
