Summary

On May 26, 1957, at about 7:50 p.m. local time, a military airman on ground observer duty in Fort Myers, Florida reported a sighting. The object was still visible when the report was made, more than four hours later.

The witness saw one object shaped like a three fingered hand. It showed a brilliant white light, with a dark object and a diffused light behind it in that order. It was about the size of a silver dollar, or a baseball through binoculars. The object was directly overhead, estimated at 15,000 to 20,000 feet, and was stationary or possibly rising slightly. Winds aloft were reported at the time.

The Air Force record (Project 10073, its official file for unidentified flying object reports) concluded that the object was a balloon, based on the description, the long time in sight, and the winds.
