Summary

On September 12, 1953, between about 0600 and 0610Z (about 1 to 2 a.m. local), military witnesses saw an object near Fort Meade, Maryland. The witnesses were two enlisted men, and the report came through Army channels.

The object was seen to the northeast, toward Laurel, Maryland, at an estimated height of 5,000 to 6,000 feet. It moved from northeast to north very swiftly, zigzagging, rising rapidly, stopping, then moving off again. It was a single golden light, like a star but about four times as large. It disappeared for two or three seconds, then reappeared.

The Army gave it an evaluation rating and noted that Andrews Air Force Base was contacted and had also seen the same thing at about the same time and place. No radar contact was made. The file also includes a separate September 13 report from Grants Pass, Oregon. The Air Force listed the case as astronomical (a star or planet).
