Summary

On October 30, 1951, about 1930 (7:30 p.m.), a civilian artist and a companion in the Four Corners area saw a bright object in the sky. The Four Corners area marks the meeting point of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. The two were on a painting trip in Monument Valley.

The observer said the object first looked like a shooting star. It traveled from near overhead in an arc of about 30 degrees, moving north to south by west toward Nevada. It first appeared white, then turned red, and its core glowed a brilliant green like a neon tube. Then it just seemed to disappear. Both observers remarked on how brilliant it was.

The witness was described as intelligent, observant, and dependable. The Air Force record card lists the conclusion as astronomical, noting the object was reported as a shooting star and evaluated as a meteor. The file also notes it as a sample of green fireball phenomena.
