Project Blue Book Case File
Flourissant, MissouriMay 1953
Summary
On May 30, 1953, at 10:00 p.m., a civilian and his wife saw an object over Florissant, Missouri. The information reached the Air Force through the FBI. The couple watched from the porch of their home.
The object moved in a straight line from west to east. The man could not estimate its speed or height. It was white and about the size of a star. His wife brought eight power field glasses, and he viewed it through them. He said it moved in a series of about eight surges or spurts, with about one second between each. Then it appeared to come to rest for about two seconds before its flight continued and it faded into the sky and stars.
The man said the glasses did not seem to bring the object any closer. He had trouble telling it from a star but did not think it was a plane or a star. The Air Force checked aircraft flight plans and asked the weather bureau about a pilot balloon released near St. Louis around the same time. The balloon was released near 0240Z and tracked to 13,000 feet. The Air Force listed the case as a balloon.
