Summary

On July 27, 1960, a Navy aircraft crew saw an object near Flores Island in the Azores at about 10:21 p.m. The sighting lasted about five seconds. The plane was on a heading toward Flores Island. The object was at about 10,000 to 12,000 feet. It was white with a red fringe and moved from east to west. It broke into two pieces and began to break apart, gradually turning green. The Air Force concluded the sighting was astronomical. The card said it had the characteristics of a bolide type sighting, though a satellite reentry was also briefly considered.
