Project Blue Book Case File

Eastbourne, England, October 1959October 1959

Insufficient Data

Summary

On a late afternoon in October 1959, a resident of Eastbourne, England saw an object in the sky that changed shape as he watched it. He described it as round when he first spotted it, then transforming into the shape of a kite as it moved toward the west. He estimated it was aluminum-colored and traveling between 2,000 and 5,000 miles per hour at an altitude of 20 to 40 miles. The object disappeared as it moved into the sunset, and the entire sighting lasted about thirty seconds.

The Air Force interviewed the witness using a standard questionnaire designed to gather detailed information about UFO encounters. The witness also provided a sketch of what he observed. However, because the sighting occurred late in the day and took place in a remote location overseas, the Air Force found it impractical to conduct a further investigation. The case file notes that lacking the necessary data, a valid conclusion about the object's nature could not be reached.

The case was eventually forwarded to the Air Technical Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The full case file, as held by the National Archives, spans 24 pages.
