Insufficient Data

Summary

On August 17, 1959, at about 0921Z, an aircraft crew reported an object over the ocean, east of North Carolina toward the West Indies. The sighting was reported from the air through the Air Force's unidentified flying object record system.

The object was shaped like a rocket and about the size of a pencil held at arm's length. It was white with a pink cloud and a bright, conical glow. The glow changed from white to green to orange.

The record card noted the object may have been a research rocket launched from Wallops Island near Virginia. It noted that such a rocket emitted a 100-mile sodium vapor trail.
