Summary

On August 11, 1960, two crew members of a military KB-50 aircraft saw an object east of Kyushu Island, Japan, at about 11:30 a.m. local time. The sighting lasted about 3 to 4 seconds. The object appeared as an orange ball of light with a slight fluorescent trail that followed the curve of the earth. It was estimated to be about 50 miles in front of the aircraft. One observer estimated its speed at several thousand miles per hour. The co-pilot watched it move across the horizon from left to right in a slight arc. Visibility was unlimited. The Air Force concluded the sighting was astronomical. The card said the high speed and description were characteristic of a meteor.
