Summary
On the night of July 20, 1950, near Southfield Township, Michigan, six Girl Scouts at a summer camp reported a bright object. The witnesses were girls aged about 12 to 14, along with their two adult Scout leaders. The story comes from a newspaper report forwarded by the Army.
The group said that around 10 p.m., while sitting at a campfire, they saw a sudden brilliant light in the sky. They described it as shaped like a cigar or a zeppelin. They said it roared toward them and broke in two, then the two pieces rejoined. The girls ran for cover when it looked like it might crash, and then it vanished as quickly as it came. People in a nearby village also reported the glow.
The file includes a later news item in which an Air Force spokesman said reports of bombers launching saucers over Michigan were really jet fighters making mock attacks on bombers during training. The Air Force record card lists no firm conclusion for the camp sighting itself.
