Summary

On the night of April 24, 1950, people in several South Carolina cities reported a bright object in the sky. The record includes reports from the Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville areas. The main sighting was around 7:50 p.m. near Sumter, South Carolina.

Witnesses were civilians and at least one Air Force weather observer. They described a large ball of fire with a long trail of sparks behind it. The weather observer said it was shaped like a cylinder, tapering at the rear, and looked about 50 feet long. He estimated it flew about 1,000 to 1,500 feet high, moving west to east in a straight line at roughly 140 miles per hour. No sound was heard. The colors reported ranged from red to blue or orange.

A newspaper clipping in the file says the object was probably a meteor. The Air Force record lists the conclusion as astronomical.
