Project Blue Book Case File
Bethel, Conn., March 1950March 1950
Summary
On March 10, 1950, a civilian in Bethel, Connecticut, reported a wing shaped object over the center of town. The witness said the object was jet black and circled over the town four times, moving slowly. It was estimated at about 8,000 feet in altitude and traveling about 25 miles per hour. The witness said it looked enclosed in transparent glass and made no sound, and that a bright white light came on at its center during the last circle. Three Navy planes were said to be in the area at the time. The object made no sound and then sped away to the northeast and vanished within seconds.
The Air Force record (Project 10073, its official file for unidentified flying object reports) listed the conclusion as psychological. The file noted it was unlikely that Navy aircraft in the same area would not have seen the object, that no report came from the Navy or anyone else, and that the report did not reach the office until October 1957, long after the sighting.
