Approximately 60 Miles East of Puerto Rico, February 1959February 1959
Summary
On February 22, 1959, civilian crewmen aboard a Dutch merchant ship about 60 miles east of Puerto Rico reported an object in the night sky. The sighting was about 1:38 a.m. (0538Z) and lasted from a few seconds up to about five minutes for different observers. The witnesses included the ship's second mate, fourth mate, and an ordinary seaman, two using binoculars.
They described one round, reddish orange object about three feet in diameter, with a steaming tail of gaseous flame. There was no sound. The object was on a collision course with the ship, made a gradual right turn before arriving overhead, then turned left and resumed its original course before disappearing over the horizon to the west.
The Air Force record card listed the case under other. Officials said the object had the general characteristics of a missile and was in a known missile range. A missile schedule was not available at the time, but all indications pointed to that analysis.
