Project Blue Book Case File
Albuquerque, New Mexico, [ILLEGIBLE]Date unknown
Summary
On the afternoon of August 9, 1952, at approximately 1815 MST (6:15 p.m.), an Air Force sergeant and several other witnesses in Albuquerque, New Mexico observed an unusual aircraft-like object in the sky. The object was round in shape, dark or black in color, and appeared slightly larger than an F-86 fighter jet at the same altitude. Most notably, it had no visible means of propulsion.
When first spotted, the object remained motionless for a moment. It then accelerated and flew in a straight line heading north at an estimated speed of 100 to 400 miles per hour (accounts in the file vary slightly on the exact speed). The witnesses watched the object for somewhere between three and seven minutes before it disappeared from view. Weather conditions at the time were clear to partly cloudy, with light winds.
The Air Force interviewed multiple witnesses and gathered sworn statements from those who saw the object. One witness described it as gray rather than black, and another noted the object appeared to be rising slightly as it moved forward. All witnesses stated the object moved in a steady, level path without changing speed or altitude. The intelligence officers who filed the report noted that the reliability of the observers was considered good. The file contains no indication of any radar contact or other corroborating data.
The Air Force assigned this case an evaluation of "unknown," meaning investigators could not identify what the object was. The complete original case file, consisting of 13 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
