Summary
On March 5, 1961, the crew of a merchant vessel reported two objects over the Atlantic at about 49 degrees 38 minutes north, 20 degrees 26 minutes west. The sighting was made at 7 p.m. GMT. There were two objects, one on the port side and one on the starboard side, about 160 degrees true. They seemed like missiles, one going about 90 degrees and the other about 110 degrees. From first observation until they came abreast took about four minutes. Streaks of smoke were still visible at 8 p.m. GMT. The sighting lasted about 40 minutes.
On Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports, the comments said the duration was too long for meteors and the motion too rapid for a planet. The report did not contain enough evidence for an analysis.
