4 Mi S of Eagle Springs, N.C., January 1959January 1959
Summary
On January 10, 1959, a civilian about 4 miles south of Eagle Springs, North Carolina, reported a bright object in the night sky. The sighting was made on the ground and lasted about one minute (2303 GMT). The witness was a truck driver.
The observer described one round object glowing white hot. It shot yellow sparks from its tail at intermittent times and fell straight down until it disappeared below the tree line. It was first seen out of the corner of the eye while driving.
The Air Force concluded the object was astronomical. The record card said the object had all the characteristics of a meteor, with a probable overestimation of how long it lasted.
