Summary

On April 17, 1960, two Air Force air policemen saw a bright object in the night sky about 4.5 nautical miles southwest of Bitburg Air Base, Germany. The night was clear with a full moon, and the men were driving at the time.

The object was shaped like a raindrop with a long tail. It was bright yellow and orange and looked about half the size of a dime. The witnesses said the object grew brighter as it fell toward the horizon. Large pieces appeared to fall from its main body, and it had a very long tail like a comet. It first appeared below the moon and moved at an angle until it disappeared behind hills. The men watched it for about four to five seconds and heard no sound.

This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force concluded the object was probably a meteor.
