Summary
On December 6, 1960, near Misawa, Japan, a white object with a tail was sighted at night. The object was roughly the size of a baseball with a tail about as wide as a baseball. It was first spotted at 32 degrees elevation, bearing about 250 degrees. It fell to 18 degrees elevation with about 5 degrees of bearing change, then disappeared after breaking up. The sighting lasted about 2 seconds and was observed from sea level with no optical aids. Four experienced deck seamen and the officer of the deck at USS Gunston Hall witnessed the event. The commanding officer believed the object was probably a meteor. No physical evidence was available to indicate the object was not a meteor.
