Summary

On December 6, 1960, near Misawa, Japan, a white object with a tail was sighted at night. The object was roughly the size of a baseball with a tail about as wide as a baseball. It was first spotted at 32 degrees elevation, bearing about 250 degrees. It fell to 18 degrees elevation with about 5 degrees of bearing change, then disappeared after breaking up. The sighting lasted about 2 seconds and was observed from sea level with no optical aids. Four experienced deck seamen and the officer of the deck at USS Gunston Hall witnessed the event. The commanding officer believed the object was probably a meteor. No physical evidence was available to indicate the object was not a meteor.

10. BRIEF SUMMARY OF SIGHTING: Object size of baseball, incandescent white with white tail. Tail length about width of baseball. No sound heard. Object first noticed at elevation 32 degrees bearing about 250. Fell to elevation 18 degrees with about 5 degrees of bearing change to 255. Disappeared by breaking up and extinguishing.

11. COMMENTS: Object viewed by witness possessed all characteristics of meteor. Custody possibilities were checked and ruled out due to absence of all light data. There is no evidence available to indicate that the object was not meteor.
