30 Mi of Oceanside -Calif., March 1959March 1959
Summary
On the night of March 13, 1959, a Navy pilot reported a bright object about 37 miles south of Oceanside, California. The sighting was made from the air at about 0027Z, in clear weather.
The witness was Commander Moore, flying an A3D aircraft at about 18,200 feet on a heading near 097 degrees and a speed of about 387 knots. He described a round, blue-green object about the size of a half-dollar. It crossed from port to starboard, heading roughly 197 degrees, and passed out of range in about two seconds. He said its light was more powerful than that of another aircraft. He could not judge its distance, so he could not be sure of its speed.
The record card noted this was the second sighting reported that night in the San Diego area. It concluded the object was probably a meteor seen at a great distance, with traits typical of a meteor passing through the upper atmosphere.
