Summary

On August 6, 1960, a military observer at sea, near 29 degrees north and 75 degrees west in the Atlantic, reported a sighting at about 7:00 p.m. The object was a white-colored flare that had been observed for about two hours and appeared stationary. Near the flare, a green projectile was spotted in the water about 2 to 3 miles away. The projectile appeared to be about 3 inches in diameter and 3 feet long, with no identifying markings. Both the flare and the projectile were in the water when seen. A Coast Guard message passed the report along, and the Air Force searched the area. The Air Force concluded the sighting was a U.S. Navy sonobuoy.
