Summary
On June 8, 1949, two crew members aboard a military aircraft near Guam spotted something unusual in the sky. They were flying at 16,500 feet on a 30-degree heading when they saw what appeared to be a traveling contrail, a white, billowing cloud of vapor left behind by an aircraft moving through the upper atmosphere. The object seemed to move from northeast to west-southwest at an estimated speed of 1,400 miles per hour. The contrail disappeared almost immediately after it formed.
The sighting lasted only about one minute. The observers reported that the white substance traveled a straight course and sat at an altitude of about 30,000 to 35,000 feet, roughly 30 miles away. By triangulating the observations from the two crew members, Air Force analysts estimated the object's speed at 1,200 miles per hour, though the initial estimate had been higher. No photographs or physical evidence was collected. Weather conditions at the time were reported as excellent.
The Air Force concluded this was probably a meteor trail. The case file notes indicate no further investigation or analysis was conducted beyond the initial report. The full case file, consisting of nine pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
