Summary
# Summary
On the early morning of July 2, 1960, at approximately 0347 (3:47 a.m.), military sentries and dog handlers stationed near the active runway at Biggs Air Force Base in Texas observed four unidentified objects in the sky. The objects appeared roughly the size of baseballs and flew together in a diamond-like formation. The witnesses reported that the objects had no distinguishable color, but each trailed a bright tail about twice as long as the objects themselves. The tail was dark red close to the object and became a white, glowing neon appearance as it extended backward. The objects remained at approximately seventy degrees elevation throughout the sighting and moved on a northwest-to-southeast flight path. Just before they vanished, the objects appeared to separate, then disappeared instantaneously toward the southeast. The entire sighting lasted between five and ten seconds.
The investigating officer arrived at the scene shortly after the report. He did not see the objects himself, but he did observe several meteor trails during his investigation. Based on these observations and the characteristics of the sighting, the investigating officer concluded that the witnesses probably saw a meteor in its early stages of disintegration. He noted, however, that the reported duration of the sighting seemed unusually long and may have been overestimated by the inexperienced witnesses. No radar confirmation or other corroborating evidence was found to support the sighting, and no substantiation came from other sources.
The Air Force's evaluation of this incident remained unknown. The full case file, consisting of 7 pages, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
