Project Blue Book Case File
Uniontown, Pa., June 1948June 1948
Summary
On the evening of June 29, 1948, around 11 p.m., several people in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, reported seeing strange objects moving across the sky. Mrs. Margaret Hollar, Charles Schuh, and Mrs. Catherine MacDonald and her daughter Catherine were among the witnesses. They watched what they described as a large, oval-shaped object that glowed and moved very fast from the southwest to the northeast. It stayed below a layer of clouds at an altitude of approximately 5,000 feet.
The witnesses said the first object traveled so quickly that it disappeared from sight in about 10 seconds. Then, at roughly five-minute intervals, two more similar objects appeared. One witness reported seeing a flash of lightning through the second object, suggesting it might be transparent or translucent. All three objects seemed to roll or spin as they moved across the sky, rotating on their edges rather than staying flat. The objects made no sound, though one observer noted a trail of light about a yard long trailing behind them. The weather that night was stormy and cloudy.
An Air Force investigator, working from interviews conducted in August 1948, gathered accounts from the original witnesses as well as information from a police sergeant and others who may have seen the display. The file includes weather records from the date and newspaper clippings reporting on the sighting. Investigator notes mention attempts to locate additional witnesses, including a "Coast Guard aviator" who allegedly photographed one of the objects, though further details about this person were not available at the time of the investigation.
The case file does not state the Air Force's final conclusion. The complete case file, as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below across 24 pages.
