Summary

On September 3, 1952, an instructor pilot with several years of flying experience spotted an unusual object near Tucson, Arizona. The observer reported that the object was dark and elliptical in shape. It reflected light dimly and gave off a greenish glow. The object made three separate passes across the sky, each moving at speeds faster than one hundred miles per hour along the horizon. The total time the observer watched it was approximately one and a half minutes.

The object was never still. During its passes, it ranged from about twenty to sixty degrees above the horizon. The observer, who was stationed at Marana Air Base, had excellent eyesight, though investigators noted he was not an experienced observer of aerial phenomena. He was located about six miles north of downtown Tucson when he made the sighting.

The weather that day was clear with good visibility. When investigators asked about the possibility of a balloon, the observer said firmly that what he saw was not a balloon. He based this judgment on the object's speed, its appearance, and how it maneuvered. No photographs were taken, and no physical evidence was found. The Air Force took no action to intercept or identify the object. The case file indicates that all known aircraft in the general area of the sighting were accounted for. The Air Force evaluation recorded on the case worksheet is not clearly legible in the OCR.
