Summary

On November 5, 1952, an unusual incident was reported near Shekhalin Island. Between 10:25 a.m. and 11:25 a.m., three visual sightings of an unidentified single-engine aircraft were made by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The first sighting occurred over Hakodate, the second over Horosobe 10 miles north of Teshio, and the third over Teshio, flying north to south at 1000 feet. All three sightings were made by NRP personnel. It could not be determined whether all three were the same aircraft. No friendly aircraft were in the area, no radar plots were obtained, and no direct contact was made with the object. The proximity of Shekhalin Island to the sighting area suggested possible Soviet origin. The Air Force evaluation noted that slow-flying aircraft at low altitude could conceivably evade detection by Soviet radars.
