Project Blue Book Case File
Port O'Connor, TexasAugust 1949
Summary
Early on August 2, 1949, Coast Guard crew members at the Port O'Connor Lifeboat Station in Texas sighted a single object in the sky. The time was about 8:45 p.m. local time the evening before, recorded in military terms as the early hours of August 2. The men watched it for about four or five minutes.
The object was described as round and giving off a dull red glow. It appeared to hang almost still at an estimated altitude of about 3,000 feet, with only slight loss of height and slow movement toward the north. It was bearing about 265 degrees from the station. The weather was partly cloudy with a very light breeze, and a squall had passed about an hour before. No sound was heard and no exhaust trail was seen. The glow faded and brightened, then disappeared completely. A check with a nearby air base found no known aircraft in the area. On the Air Force record for unidentified flying object reports (Project 10073), the conclusion was astronomical, listed as the planet Venus.
