Summary
On September 12, 1952, a worker at Olmsted Air Force Base in Middletown, Pennsylvania, saw a bright white light while on duty. The observer described it as resembling an automobile headlight from a distance. The light moved in a straight line from the southwest to the northwest, traveling at a speed slower than an airplane. It remained visible for about three to four minutes, though it dimmed considerably for roughly five seconds before becoming bright again. The observer heard no sound and noted no exhaust from the object.
Weather conditions at the time were clear, with twelve miles of visibility and calm winds. There were no local aircraft in the air during the sighting. The observer was stationed at the base and reported the incident through official channels.
In its analysis, the Air Force office handling the report acknowledged it could offer no definite explanation for what was seen. The duration of the sighting, which the observer reported as three to four minutes, seemed inconsistent with astronomical phenomena such as meteors. However, the investigators noted that despite the observer's insistence that the object did not resemble an aircraft and that no sound was heard, the object's steady speed and level flight path suggested the possibility of conventional aircraft. The file indicates no final determination was reached.
