Summary
The OCR text of this case file is heavily degraded and largely illegible, particularly on pages 1, 4, 5, and portions of others. However, the core facts can be extracted from pages 2 and 3, which contain the formal Air Intelligence Information Report.
On July 24, 1952, at approximately 1230 (12:30 p.m.) Mountain Standard Time, 1st Lieutenant William A. Fricks of the 810th Operations Squadron at Biggs Air Force Base in El Paso, Texas observed an unidentified flying object. The sighting lasted about ten minutes and was visible to the naked eye from the flight line near Base Operations. Approximately thirty other people in the area also witnessed the object, though no optical instruments were used by observers.
Lieutenant Fricks described the object as appearing metallic but could not determine its exact size or shape. He believed it had at least one flat surface because it frequently reflected sunlight. The object showed no vapor trails, exhaust, or visible means of propulsion. Its most distinctive behavior was a frequent oscillation around its longitudinal axis (a spinning or wobbling motion along its lengthwise direction). Fricks estimated the object traveled at considerable altitude and at times moved at high speed. He ruled out conventional aircraft and weather balloons.
The object was first observed to the east of the base, then appeared to move toward and cross the base before disappearing from view. The lieutenant notified the Control Tower officer of the sighting. No electronic equipment in the area detected any unidentified objects. The Air Force's evaluation of this case is marked as unknown in the file metadata. Page 8 contains a teletype message confirming that no weather balloons were released in the area between 1142 and 1745 MST on July 24. The full case file, consisting of nine pages, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
