# Summary
On July 7, 1947, a man walking along U.S. Highway 92 about one mile east of Lakeland, Florida heard a loud swishing noise with a shrill whine. He looked up and saw five shiny objects climbing rapidly from around 5,000 feet to approximately 7,500 feet in just 15 to 30 seconds. The objects were traveling northeast and upward. He estimated they were about a mile away.
The witness observed what he thought were spots or ports on either side of the objects, plus a center spot he believed was the tail. The objects had no wings. The leading object appeared to be made of plastic and seemed to be towing the other four glittering objects behind it. The sky was clear with scattered clouds.
The witness, a former sign painter and cab driver who had previously served as a second-class seaman in the U.S. Navy, made a model of what he saw and offered it as evidence. The model was roughly two feet in diameter with a domed top and bottom and an opening in the rear or on either side of a vertical fin. A background check of neighbors and former associates found no connection to any subversive organizations.
Air Force investigators noted that the incident had "all the aspects of a psychopathological report" and found no astronomical explanation for the sighting.
