[ILLEGIBLE], Fall 1948 - Incident Number: [ILLEGIBLE]Circa 1948
Summary
Before dawn on a fall morning in 1948, a person in Vineyard Haven on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, reported a strange sky display in a letter to the Air Force. The weather was stormy. The observer looked out a second floor window facing northeast toward Cape Cod, about 8 miles away.
The witness said the sky held chains of glowing discs that moved in fast, sweeping patterns. The individual discs looked about the size of a match head, and the chains looked about the length of a matchstick. The chains were faint shades of blue, lavender, pink, and green. They soared, dipped, and swerved without colliding.
The witness said the discs seemed to overlap like fish scales and looked self propelled, not floating. The display ran from about 3,000 feet above the Cape to several times that height. It faded as daylight came. The whole sighting lasted about five to ten minutes. The letter says the witness wondered if it was an Air Force experiment. The document does not list an Air Force conclusion.
