Project Blue Book Case File
Helsinki, Finland, January 1948 - Incident Number: 100January 1948
Summary
On January 5, 1948, residents of Pietsarsaari, Finland, saw a bright, shining object move across the sky from north to south. The object remained visible for about ten seconds. Another similar sighting occurred near Vaasa, Finland, on the same day, when observers spotted a brightly shining object with a long tail that traveled from west to east and lasted about thirty seconds. According to witness accounts, both objects had flames and left grey streaks in the sky.
The U.S. Military Attaché in Helsinki reported these incidents to the Director of Intelligence in Washington on January 13, 1948. The attaché noted that the Finnish press had been covering the sightings and had begun using the term "flying saucers" to describe the phenomena. He also mentioned that a similar report had come from Utasjoki in Northern Finland near the Norwegian border on December 20, 1947, suggesting this might be part of a series of related sightings.
The Air Force evaluators acknowledged that the information provided was limited and insufficient to identify what the objects actually were. However, they concluded that nothing in the sparse reports ruled out a meteorological explanation, meaning the sightings could be explained by natural atmospheric phenomena like meteors or other weather-related events.
