Summary

On November 8, 1957, a civilian near Freeport, Texas reported a red ball of fire. The sighting lasted about 2 minutes. The object showed no sideways movement and made no sound. It first appeared low, then slowly gained altitude. It disappeared and reappeared at a greater height.

The witness, a grocery store employee, first saw the object directly over his car. It was also watched with the naked eye and with glasses from a Coast Guard watchtower about two miles southwest. The sky was clear with a temperature of 59 degrees and light wind. The object was seen to the southwest.

The Air Force concluded the case was probably aircraft. Officers noted the witnesses were located directly under an airway and probably saw an airliner. This case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
