FALLS CHURCH VA., [ILLEGIBLE] - Incident Number: [ILLEGIBLE]Date unknown
Summary
On July 17, 1952, at 10:05 p.m. Eastern Daylight time, a colonel assigned to Air Force headquarters watched three lights from his yard in Falls Church, Virginia. One light was red and two were white. They appeared to travel together in fixed formation in the same vertical plane. The lights were a low, diffused glow like aircraft running lights and did not blink. Other much dimmer lights seemed to be in the area between them, giving the impression something connected the objects, though this could not be confirmed.
The objects were first seen at about 350 degrees azimuth and followed for about 10 to 15 seconds. They were on a straight flight path slanting down at about 45 degrees, and were lost behind trees. No trails were seen. The observer also reported an irregular sputtering sound with a low pitch, different from aircraft engines, which he said is what made him report the event. The sound was heard with the sighting and faded shortly after.
The sighting was made with the naked eye. The observer reported no moon or clouds but a slight high overcast. His wife also saw the incident and agreed on the details, except she remembered the lower light as orange rather than red. The colonel reported the event to an Air Force command post right away but said they showed no interest.
