E of Corpus Christi, TexasAugust 1960
Summary
On August 17, 1960, Coast Guard observers east of Corpus Christi, Texas saw an object at about 9:12 p.m. The sighting lasted about 13 minutes. The object was round and white, about the size of a first magnitude star. It moved steadily eastward, then disappeared behind a low cloud. The weather was partly cloudy with moderate seas. The reporting officer thought it was not a conventional aircraft and considered a possible satellite. A later check found that the satellite Echo I passed over the Houston area at about the same time on an eastward path. The Air Force concluded the object was probably the Echo I satellite.
