CHARLOTTSVILLE, VIRGINIA, [ILLEGIBLE]Date unknown
Summary
In Charlottsville, Virginia, a report was received of a yellowish orange light appearing oval in shape. The object traveled from east in a presumed west direction with undulating motion. It was at least twice the diameter of any known aircraft and very bright and well defined. Observers at 2115 feet elevation from a home in Charlottsville picked it up at about 45 degrees elevation in the east and lost it behind trees at about the same elevation in the southeast. The object was held under observation for about 3 minutes while moving slightly. An aircraft appeared about 15 minutes later from the west at high altitude. It started losing latitude noticeably and had flashing landing lights, definitely not navigational lights. The aircraft made normal sound during passage. One witness considered the situation unusual because there was no landing field in the area except an emergency strip. No clouds were observed and the moon was not visible. The incident was reported to local civil defense aircraft spotters in Charlottsville.
