Summary

On August 21, 1958, a civilian witness observed an unidentified object between Vinton and Oelwein, Iowa. The object was cone-shaped with a rounded leading edge and measured 15 to 20 inches in diameter. It was bright with a tinge of ultraviolet light and appeared invisible to the naked eye. The object moved north and then south before becoming obscured by cloud cover. The sighting lasted 15 minutes. No weather or wind information was reported, and positional data were omitted. The Air Force evaluation concluded the sighting was possibly a balloon; however, the data was insufficient for evaluation.
