Summary
On the night of August 11, 1952, multiple airmen at Tempelhof Air Base in Berlin, Germany saw unidentified objects in the sky. Around 2300 hours (11 p.m.), the Fire Department called the Control Tower and asked staff to look south of the field. When tower personnel looked, they spotted three glowing objects hovering in the distance. The objects were described as cloud-like and elliptical in shape, and they glowed brightly enough to stand out against the dark sky. One object was noticeably brighter than the other two.
The bright object moved rapidly eastward at high speed and then vanished from sight. As it flew across the sky, no trail was visible behind it, and no sound was heard. The other two objects disappeared as well, though observers did not see which direction they went. The entire sighting lasted roughly one to two minutes. Some witnesses suggested the objects might have been searchlights projecting on clouds, but one airman noted there were no visible beams coming from the ground, which made that explanation questionable.
The radar operator on duty at the time stated he had not noticed any unidentified objects on his radar screen. He suggested the objects might have been too close to the radar station to be detected, or that any radar signals could have been missed because unidentified radar blips were very common and often went unnoticed. The weather at the time was partly cloudy with good visibility. An Air Force investigation found no positive identification for what the objects were. The file contains 15 pages as preserved by the National Archives.
